Tinnitus Treatment Options

Tinnitus is the term used to describe the condition of having ringing, buzzing, or noise in the ear or originating from the head. The word tinnitus is Latin and literally means ringing.

Treating the Cause

Irreversible hearing damage is one of the most common occupational illnesses currently reported in the United States. While some hearing loss takes place gradually, such as constant exposure to heavy machine noise, other damage can happen instantly, such as a single gunshot at close range. Repeated exposure to insistent noise destroys the hair cells within the inner ear, which leads to a constant ringing sensation. There can be other causes of tinnitus, including:

  • Neurological Damage
  • Stroke
  • Stress
  • Allergies
  • Earwax Buildup
  • Medication Side Effects
  • Blood Pressure Changes
  • Infections

It is crucial that you receive a complete exam to rule out underlying causes before moving forward with treatment options.

What Treatments are Available?

There is a variety of tools and treatments for tinnitus, but currently no cure. Pacific Audiology works with each patient on a personal level to create a treatment plan that will lessen the burden of tinnitus until a complete cure is found. Our treatment is to fit our patients in open-fit hearing aids with or without a tinnitus masker. These aids can be shaped to mask the subjective tinnitus, which is different for each individual.

Though M.D.’s are able to prescribe medications to patients to treat their tinnitus, we do not dispense medication at Pacific Audiology.

Pacific Audiology focuses on patient care and understanding the strong power of communication between patient and practitioner. Our wide range of treatment options can help patients with tinnitus return to a full life. Call us today to learn more, or schedule an appointment online.
